Set in a valley surrounded by low mountains, Sucre was an enjoyable place to visit. My family and friends things I’m crazy for saying this as it was the place in South America where I was pick-pocketed, robbed & contracted giardiasis (a parasitic infection) which a week later led to my admission to hospital.
But my 3 days in Sucre were fantastic!
The whitewashed buildings of colonial architecture are pretty and I loved the local market. The main farmers market in Sucre is Mercado Central where you can buy the freshest vegetables, fruits, herbs, spices, legumes, breads, meats and household goods at the cheapest prices. I had the most amazing tomatoes from this market, bought fresh bread and cheese daily and tried my first churros.
Sucre was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991.
Sucre is also home to one of the largest collections of dinosaur footprints in the world. The footprints (over 5000 of them) are set into a the Cal Orck’o cliff, just 5kms from the city center. Called Parque Cretácico, the park was well worth the visit because let’s face it – dinosaurs are awesome. For me just the fact that I could see dinosaur footprints from 65 million years ago is incredible.
