    The Majestic Dolomites

    by Stacey 17 October 2023
    written by Stacey

When my sister Becca and I landed in Verona and picked up our hire car, we knew we were in for a beautiful adventure.

What we didn’t quite expect was that this trip would feel like two completely different holidays stitched into one unforgettable week. Our route took us first to the sun-drenched shores of Lake Garda, where pastel-coloured lakeside towns, Aperol spritzes and lazy waterfront evenings set the tone for the first chapter of our journey.

Then, after a few blissful days soaking up la dolce vita, we pointed the car north and drove into another world entirely.

As Lake Garda’s olive groves and Mediterranean charm gradually disappeared in the rear-view mirror, the scenery transformed.

The roads climbed. The air sharpened. Jagged limestone peaks began to pierce the horizon.

And suddenly, it felt as though we’d crossed into another country.

    The Dolomites have that effect.

    They don’t simply impress you.

They stop you in your tracks.

    The Drive into the Dolomites

The journey from Lake Garda into the Dolomites deserves its own mention because it was one of the most memorable drives I’ve ever done.

This is where the trip shifted completely. The closer we got, the more surreal the landscape became. Rolling hills gave way to dense pine forests. Traditional Italian villas were replaced by neat wooden chalets adorned with flower boxes.

Road signs began appearing in both Italian and German.

The architecture changed. The atmosphere changed.

Even the food menus changed. It genuinely felt as though we had crossed a border into Austria or Switzerland rather than simply driven a few hours north within Italy.

This unique blend is part of what makes the Dolomites so fascinating.

Located in South Tyrol, the region has a rich Austro-Italian heritage that gives it an identity entirely its own.

And then there are the mountains themselves. No photo fully prepares you. The Dolomites don’t have the smooth, rolling grandeur of some alpine ranges.

    They’re sharper.

    More dramatic.

    More theatrical.

Their jagged limestone spires rise abruptly from green meadows like something from a fantasy film set. Every turn in the road seemed to reveal another impossibly beautiful panorama.

There were multiple moments where Becca and I simply looked at each other and laughed.

How was this place even real?

Lago di Braies: The Emerald Jewel of the Dolomites

If there is one image that has become synonymous with the Dolomites in recent years, it’s probably Lago di Braies.

And yes — it really is that stunning.

We arrived early in the morning, which I’d highly recommend if you’re visiting during peak season.

The lake was calm, the crowds were still thin, and the surface reflected the surrounding peaks so perfectly it almost looked unreal.

The colour is what strikes you first.

An extraordinary emerald-blue that shifts depending on the light, somewhere between turquoise and jade.

Set against dark pine forests and towering mountain walls, it creates one of the most visually arresting landscapes I’ve ever seen. We decided to walk the full circuit around the lake, which is an easy and incredibly scenic route that loops around the shoreline. Every few minutes we’d stop. The trail offers constantly changing perspectives — from boardwalk sections skimming the water’s edge to elevated woodland paths with sweeping views back across the lake.

It’s one of those rare walks that’s accessible enough for almost anyone, yet spectacular enough to leave a lasting impression.

Of course, no visit to Lago di Braies feels complete without admiring its iconic wooden rowing boats. Floating across that impossibly coloured water is probably one of the most photographed experiences in the Dolomites, and seeing them in person felt every bit as magical as the images suggest.

There’s a peacefulness to the lake that’s hard to describe.

Despite its popularity, it still manages to feel serene. Almost cinematic.

It’s the kind of place that makes you instinctively lower your voice.

Seceda: The View That Left Us Speechless

As breathtaking as Lago di Braies was, our absolute highlight of the trip was undoubtedly Seceda.

And if I’m being honest, no amount of Instagram hype prepared us for just how extraordinary it would be.

Seceda is easily one of the most iconic locations in the Italian Alps.

Famous for its dramatic slanting peaks — part of the Odle Group (also known as the Geisler peaks) — it offers one of the most surreal mountain landscapes in Europe. What makes it so unforgettable is the contrast.

You stand on a sweeping green alpine meadow, all softness and tranquillity. And then, just ahead, the earth seems to suddenly drop away into a jagged rocky abyss.

The blade-like peaks rise sharply from the landscape in this almost impossible geological formation.

    It feels dramatic. Raw. Otherworldly.

The beauty of Seceda is how accessible it is. You don’t need to be an experienced hiker or spend hours climbing to reach the main viewpoint. From the charming mountain town of Ortisei, we took the cable car up toward the summit.

The ascent alone is spectacular, lifting you high above forests and alpine meadows as the peaks gradually reveal themselves. From the summit station, it’s only about a 15-minute scenic walk to reach the famous ridgeline viewpoint.

    That view.

The one you’ve seen in photos.

Except in person, it’s infinitely more powerful.

There’s a scale and depth that cameras simply can’t capture.

Why the Dolomites Feel So Different

One of the things that struck us most throughout the trip was just how distinct the Dolomites feel from the rest of Italy. There’s an Alpine precision here. The villages are gorgeous. The roads are pristine. Window boxes overflow with flowers. Everything feels incredibly orderly.

Yet it still carries that unmistakable Italian warmth.

You get the best of both worlds:

The efficiency and mountain culture of the Alps combined with exceptional Italian food, wine and hospitality.

After days of pasta and lakeside aperitivos around Garda, suddenly we were tucking into mountain cuisine that leaned heavily Austrian.

It added another layer to the sense that this trip had transported us somewhere entirely new.

    Travelling with My Sister

There’s something special about taking a trip like this with your sister.

Becca and I travel well together, which is not something to be underestimated on a road trip involving mountain passes, navigation disagreements and questionable parking decisions.

There’s an ease to sibling travel when it works.

No pressure to constantly fill silence. No need to impress. Just shared excitement, mutual appreciation for beautiful places, and the occasional heated discussion over who’s in charge of directions.

Some of my favourite memories from the trip aren’t necessarily the headline moments.

    They’re the smaller ones.

Laughing uncontrollably after taking a wrong turn.

Sharing that immediate look of disbelief when a new mountain panorama appeared.

Those are the moments that stay with you.
