There’s something endlessly fascinating to me about the idea of the Wonders of the World.
These are the places that stop us in our tracks, the monuments, landscapes and man-made masterpieces that make us question how on earth they were created. They represent the pinnacle of human imagination, engineering and ambition.
For centuries, travellers, historians and explorers have been captivated by these extraordinary landmarks. They spark curiosity, inspire adventure, and remind us of the remarkable things humanity has achieved across thousands of years. But what many people don’t realise is that there isn’t just one official list of the Seven Wonders of the World.
There’s the original ancient list, several modern interpretations, and even categories dedicated to nature and engineering.
So, what exactly are the Seven Wonders of the World?
The Ancient 7 Wonders of the World
The original list, now known as the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World, was compiled by ancient Greek scholars who documented the most extraordinary constructions known to their civilisation.
These wonders represented the greatest architectural and artistic achievements of the ancient world.
Sadly, six of the seven have been destroyed or lost to time.
Only one still stands.
1. The Great Pyramid of Giza
The most famous and enduring of all the ancient wonders, the Great Pyramid of Giza is also the oldest. Built over 4,500 years ago as a tomb for the Egyptian pharaoh Khufu (also known as Cheops), it remains one of the most astonishing engineering achievements in human history.
It is the largest pyramid in the Giza complex and, remarkably, the only ancient wonder still largely intact today. For thousands of years, it held the title of the tallest man-made structure on Earth. Even now, its scale is difficult to comprehend.
How ancient civilisations managed to construct something so precise and monumental without modern machinery remains one of history’s greatest mysteries.

2. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon
Perhaps the most mysterious of all the ancient wonders, the Hanging Gardens are believed to have existed in ancient Babylon, located in present-day Iraq. According to historical accounts, they were built by King Nebuchadnezzar II for his wife, who longed for the green landscapes of her homeland.
The gardens were said to feature elaborate terraces overflowing with exotic plants, trees and flowing water — an extraordinary feat in the arid climate of Mesopotamia. Yet despite their fame, no physical evidence has ever been discovered.
This has led many historians to debate whether the gardens truly existed or were simply an ancient legend.
3. The Colossus of Rhodes
The Colossus of Rhodes was a gigantic bronze statue of the Greek sun god Helios. Standing approximately 33 metres high — roughly the height of the Statue of Liberty from feet to crown — it was one of the tallest statues of the ancient world.
Constructed to celebrate Rhodes’ victory over Cyprus, it symbolised strength and triumph. Its existence, however, was short-lived. Just 54 years after completion, it was destroyed by a devastating earthquake in 226 BC and was never rebuilt.
Though it no longer exists, it remains one of history’s most iconic lost monuments.
4. The Lighthouse of Alexandria
Also known as the Pharos of Alexandria, this extraordinary lighthouse was built between 280 and 247 BC.
Standing between 120 and 137 metres tall, it was one of the tallest man-made structures in the world for centuries. Located on the island of Pharos in Alexandria’s harbour, it served as a beacon guiding sailors safely to shore.
Its ingenious mirrored fire system was considered revolutionary for its time. Repeated earthquakes eventually damaged the structure beyond repair, and it was abandoned before finally disappearing completely.
5. The Temple of Artemis
This magnificent Greek temple was dedicated to Artemis, goddess of the hunt and wilderness. Located in ancient Ephesus (modern-day Turkey), it was renowned for its enormous size and intricate marble craftsmanship.
The temple was rebuilt several times after destruction caused by floods, fire and invasion. Today, only fragments and foundations remain.
But in its prime, it was considered one of the most beautiful structures ever created.
6. The Statue of Zeus at Olympia
This enormous seated statue of Zeus stood around 13 metres tall inside the Temple of Zeus at Olympia. Created by the sculptor Phidias, it was crafted from ivory and gold-plated bronze. Historical descriptions portray it as breathtakingly elaborate, depicting Zeus seated on an ornate throne.
It is believed to have been lost sometime during the 5th century AD. Today, our understanding of its appearance comes largely from ancient Greek texts and images stamped on coins.
7. The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
Built between 353 and 350 BC, this monumental tomb was constructed for Mausolus, ruler of Caria, and his wife (and sister), Artemisia. Located in present-day Turkey, it was so impressive that the word “mausoleum” is now used to describe grand tombs worldwide.
Though eventually destroyed by earthquakes, portions survived for centuries. Its architectural influence can still be seen in memorial structures around the world today.
The New 7 Wonders of the World
In 2000, the New7Wonders Foundation launched a global campaign to create a modern list.
Millions of people voted for the monuments they believed deserved recognition as today’s greatest wonders.
The final list was announced in 2007.
1. Great Wall of China
Stretching over 13,000 miles, this ancient defensive system is one of humanity’s most ambitious construction projects.
2. Christ the Redeemer
Towering above Rio, this Art Deco statue has become one of the world’s most recognisable landmarks.
3. Machu Picchu
The breathtaking Incan citadel hidden high in the Andes.

Not all wonders are man-made.
Some were shaped over millions of years by nature itself.
The recognised natural wonders include:

- Table Mountain

These celebrate engineering brilliance.
They include:

- Itaipu Dam
- Delta Works
- Panama Canal
The 7 Wonders of the Medieval World
A lesser-known but equally fascinating list includes:
- Stonehenge
- Colosseum
- Leaning Tower of Pisa
- Hagia Sophia
- Great Wall of China
- Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa
- Porcelain Tower of Nanjing
Why the Wonders Still Matter
The Seven Wonders, ancient and modern — are more than just famous landmarks.
Standing before one of these sites is a reminder of how small we are in the timeline of history, and how remarkable human achievement can be.
Whether it’s gazing up at the Great Pyramid, standing in awe beneath the Taj Mahal, or watching the mist rise over Iguazu Falls, these places connect us to something bigger than ourselves.
And perhaps that’s why we continue to seek them out.
