We have had only 1 day in Copenhagen, it has been just a short stop on our way to Iceland. (Thankfully there was a luggage storage facility available at Copenhagen Airport so we managed to get a full 12 hours exploring the city with our trailing our luggage with us). It is absolutely freezing so we booked on to do a hop-on-hop-off bus tour of the city. I am so very excited about seeing the Little Mermaid. Unveiled on 23 August 1913, The Little Mermaid was a gift from Danish brewer Carl Jacobsen to the City of Copenhagen. The sculpture is made of bronze and granite and was inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale about a mermaid who gives up everything to be united with a young, handsome prince on land.

In the afternoon we visited the Christmas Markets in Tivoli Gardens, it is absolutely freezing cold but the Christmas Markets there really were very beautiful. There was stall after stall of gorgeous household goods, food, drinks and games which was very festive and pleasant to walk around (with frequent stops at the fire pit’s to warm up). It costs to get in but in return the markets are a cut above others that we have visited in Europe and with the added bonus of snow it was a real christmas treat.
